Our Divine Abode

Sri Mahavishnu Nidvala Temple is one of the most revered places of worship in the Nidvala region. Dedicated to Lord Mahavishnu in Chaturbhuja (four-armed) form, the temple has been a spiritual center for generations of devotees seeking peace, prosperity, and divine blessings.

History & Legacy

The temple traces its origins to ancient times and has been nurtured through centuries by the devotion of the Nidvala community. Legends narrate that rulers and devotees alike have supported the temple, making it a hub of faith and culture. Over time, the temple has undergone several renovations and developments, while still preserving its spiritual essence and age-old traditions.

The Shree Mahavishnu Temple in Nidvala was established around the 14th or 15th century by the Enmuru Ballala Kings. Its sacred history is linked to the 12th-century Hoysala King Bittideva (Vishnuvardhana), who commissioned the Mahavishnu idol, which was later acquired and consecrated here by the Ballala rulers. The temple served as a primary place of worship for the famed heroic twins, Koti Chennaya, who are said to have taken the temple’s holy offering before their passing. Over time, the structure fell into disrepair (Ajirnavasthe), leading to the idol being temporarily moved to the nearby village of Chukkadi. However, an 1929 Ashtamangala Prashna (astrological consultation) mandated the deity’s re-establishment in Nidvala to prevent misfortune, prompting a significant renovation. A more recent Ashtamangala Prashna has directed the temple’s current major renovation, which involves a crucial change: re-consecrating the deity to face West—a direction symbolically chosen because it aligns with the Ballala King’s palace and Koti Chennaya’s shrine, ensuring the deity’s complete grace upon the region. The temple is actively being rebuilt, with the re-consecration ceremony (Brahmakalashotsava) tentatively scheduled for April or May 2026.
